Hi, I’m Philip, the owner & stylist at Prickly Poppy Hair Studio- I’ve been a hairstylist for over 15 years. I’m a Paul Mitchell graduate but spent much of my career working with & educating with Aveda. Including roles as a salon educator, hair color purefessional, assistant manager and now owner. Education has always been an important part of my career, while I’ve shifted much of my education online since opening my private studio, I’m always on the lookout for hands on classes in order to be as up to date as possible. I’m Jacksonville born and raised, with a lifetime of summers spent in Texas. I’ve been with my husband for more than 19 years, and we have two dogs and a cat. We love to travel, spend time outdoors, and enjoy just about anything that lets us explore—heat and humidity depending of course. Hair color is my true passion. I love that color can be completely customized to each of us and I nerd out with the science behind what makes it work. There’s something so fun about combining your inspiration, my application, and then the chemistry to create the desired color.

Being in a private studio gives us the opportunity to slow things down and you get my full attention. There’s no busy salon floor, no distractions, no worried about anyone else and no pressure to be anything other than yourself. At the end of the day, I want Prickly Poppy to be a place where everyone can feel comfortable being themselves. Kindness & respect are non-negotiable here, I have zero tolerance for negativity, discrimination or hateful behavior towards anyone. I want this to be a safe and welcoming space for every person who sits in my chair and I will protect that environment by ending the service and asking you to leave. Whether you’re looking for a fresh color, a great haircut, a complete transformation, or simply a quiet place to take a breath for a couple of hours, I’d love to welcome you into the studio. The name Prickly Poppy is a little piece of my family that I wanted to bring here. Prickly Poppies are native to South Texas, where my family is located. I did grow up in Jacksonville but spent every summer over there, so bringing that into my business feels really special. The flower itself-what really caught my attention was the contrast of the delicate, beautiful blooms surrounded by thorny leaves. I love the balance of softness & strength, which became the inspiration for my studio space. I’ve brought some of that South Texas warmth into the studio through the colors, textures, and plants. I want Prickly Poppy to feel warm, cozy, light, and airy so it feels like a place where you can take a deep breath, exhale the day and relax while you get your hair done. There are always cold beverages and a few snacks available because sometimes the little things make a big difference. Prickly Poppy Hair Studio is in Jacksonville’s historic Five Points/Riverside area. Tucked just behind the main strip of Five Points inside the Sola Salon building.
